Taxonomic Changes 2019

The new common and or scientific names are highlighted in Bold below for birds found either on the Osa Peninsula or in the southern Pacific region of Costa Rica. For other taxonomic order changes or merges/splits, please refer to the American Ornithological Society (AOS) checklist of North and Middle American birds currently in its 7th edition and its supplements. These newest changes can be found in the 60th Supplement of the Auk. Our checklist of birds reflects all AOS changes.
1) The Doves lose their hyphens
There is a small change for doves; please remove the hyphen for Ground-Doves. They should now be written: Common Ground Dove, Plain-breasted Ground Dove, Ruddy Ground Dove, and the Blue Ground Dove.

2) The Vermiculated Screech-Owl has split
The Vermiculated Screech-Owl (Megascops guatemalae) has been split into two species; Middle American Screech-Owl (Megascops guatemalae) found from Mexico to Panama, including Costa Rica (this is ours), and the Choco Screech-Owl (Megascops centralis) from central Panama down to South America.

3) The Warbler genus Oreothlypis has been split
The Tennessee Warbler (Oreothlypis peregrina) has moved to the genus Leiothlypis and is now Leiothlypis peregrina. The common name remains the same.

4) The Tanager genus has been split
The Golden-hooded Tanager (Tangara larvata) has been moved to the genus Stilpnia to become Stilpnia larvata. The Speckled Tanager has been moved to the genus Ixothraupis to become Ixothraupis guttata. The common names remain the same.

5) The split of Cyanocompsa
The Blue-black Grosbeak (Cyanocompsa cyanoides) has been moved to the genus Cyanoloxia to become Cyanoloxia cyanoides. The common name remains the same.
